If my eyes aren't deceiving me, the plate on the signal reads J3 172 (meaning track J3, this being the eastbound center track of the Broadway/Brooklyn line, 17,200 feet north (timetable south) of Chambers Street). Signal plates would be the first thing I'd look for when trying to find out where a picture was taken, as they identify a location absolutely.
