There has to be an obvious answer to this stupid question, but I can't figure it out.

Why does the A go to two different places (Lefferts/FarRock)? No other line has two different destinations, why cause confusion with the A?

Instead, why not send the C to Lefferts and let all the A trains to FarRock?

Not true at all. The 5 line has as many as SEVEN different destinations. Five of them are during rush hours: Nereid or Dyre on the Bronx end and Flatbush, Utica, or New Lots on the Brooklyn end - the last two are not even noted on the subway map!! During non-rush hours it does not go to Brooklyn at all, terminating at Bowling Green. Finally, at night it does not even leave the Bronx, turning into a shuttle between Dyre and E 180th! Talk about confusing!

Of course the entire J/M/Z line is even more confusing, having a totally different configuration depending on the time and day.

Sometimes the 5 terminates at Grand Concourse as well.
