Mets fans looking for a quicker trip to midtown after each and every home game will now be able to take advantage of express service on the 7 line from the Willets Point/Shea Stadium Station. The service change, which begins following the conclusion of the Mets - Cincinnati Reds game on Thursday, July 12th, will shave five minutes off the trip, making it the smart choice for many savvy baseball fans headed home.

Express trains will leave Willets Point at the conclusion of each home game and the service will last for 45 minutes after the game. The express trains will be queued outside of Willets Point and arrive on the middle track every six minutes. The travel time between Willets Point/Shea Stadium and Queensboro Plaza will be trimmed by five minutes from 17 on the local to 12 minutes via express. To Times Square, the ride by express train will be reduced by five minutes from the 28 minutes it takes the local.

"The introduction of post-game express service is a major component of an overall initiative with the Mets to get people out of their cars and onto the train," said Elliot G. Sander, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. "The subway has always been the fastest, most economical and ecologically-friendly way to travel to and from the game and the addition of express service makes it even more attractive."

Aside from the addition of express service, local service has been modified so that Manhattan-bound local trains will arrive at Willets Point/Shea Stadium every six minutes. "This amounts to a beefing up of our local service, as well," noted NYC Transit President Howard H. Roberts, Jr. "Shaving time off the homebound trip is important to everyone and our Operations Planning and Department of Subways personnel have come up with a plan that makes the trip home that much easier."

The introduction of this express service coincides with the start-up of a courtesy campaign NYC Transit has developed with the Mets. In the campaign, NYC Transit and Mr. Met are reminding riders to be mindful of their manners as they take advantage of the new express service. Two-thousand ads featuring Mr. Met have been placed throughout the subway system since July 1. The ads, part of NYC Transit's ongoing courtesy initiative, urge customers to make room for their fellow riders by "keeping their stuff off seats for a better ride." The courtesy campaign joins the larger collaborative effort between New York City Transit and the New York Mets to encourage riders to take the train to the games at Shea Stadium.

Customers needing help with travel plans to and from Shea Stadium may call our Travel Information Center at 718-330-1234 from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, or visit www.mta.info to use the Trip Planner feature.
