Are there catwalks in the PATH tunnels?
There seem to be ledges along side the track, but as I was observing under the Hudson River between HOB and Christopher, the ledges are really narrow and too high to fit a person, which led me to believe that the ledges are probabaly for conduits, encased in concrete. Not only that, but there were also pipes and wires above the ledge, which prohibits clearancefor a worker. Along 6th Av, there seemed to be clearance for track workers on the right hand side.

So how is track work done when train service is run, if workers don't have a place to stand aside when trains pass? There weren't even the wall cutouts like the ones in 14th and 23rd stations. The entire NYC subway system and 'el' seems to have catwalks.

Many circular tunnels do not have sufficinet room for clearing up. The cost of initial tunnel boring and ventilation go up as the tunnel diameter increases, so many tunnels were constructed with just enough room for the dynamic envelope and a duct bench. It also appears that many asbestos filled ducts in the PATH benches were abandoned with the replacements mounted on the wall above.

The tunnels between Exchange Place and WTC are essentially brand new except for the iron rings. After the water damage from 9-11, the PA stripped them down and rebuilt everything in them from scratch.
