Amazing what can be done with compatible equipment. Sadly the more recent equipment has pretty much ended that. The R-40s were a good choice for the end of the train. They are distinctive! The transit museum and the workers who maintain these historic cars deserve much credit!

One question: Why does all this retired New York equipment look so much better than in-service Boston equipment?

HAHAHA-good one. in my opinion it's because the museum has a dedicated workforce who really care about what they are doing and enjoy it. It must be awesome to take care of those cars.

I'm rather surprised that the R38s were in such bad condition however-the benches were scarred, etc. However, the R40s were pretty decent... After riding the R40 back from the Rockaways, I suddenly realized how bumpy a ride they give after getting on an R62A home :P

I was also surprised the R16 could legitimately move under its own power.

Stainless steel cars should be bright and shiny, not a dull grayish brown. Even the fifty year old R-32s look pretty good. (And you know how many layers of graffiti have been scrubbed off those cars.) Compare that to a 20 year old 01800. They also sound good. I was watching a rfw video and you could hear soft conversations in the background.
