Well, when the entire order of the R160 cars are in by 2009, the R32 will likely be staying around a bit longer but why retire the R44 when the R160 car order is completed.

The R44 is among the least reliable of the NYCT cars and has many techincal issues.

Plus it had a few mechanical problems as well, so they may as well retire part of the R44 fleet, and keep a few for contingency service.
