Reading Station Question

I remember, probably sometime in the 90’s, the T re-did the Reading commuter rail station. Prior to the redo, there was a platform on both sides of the track and often trains would open doors on both sides. During the re-do, they moved the right side platform back a track length, they even put in the warning strips and “stand back” paint. It would seem they planned to put in a 2nd track. What were the plans and what happened? Why spend all that $ for nothing?
