Looking at the track arrangement and freight operations at Worcester, it appears that all of the freight trains that need to make a pick up or drop off in the yard do so by entering the yard, and those that need to pass through do so at the yard bypass track through the yard.

It looks like this was done deliberately so that CSX doesn't have to enter MBTA territory unless they really need to, and so that freights can use that track. Does this mean that perhaps sometimes in the near future, there will be more platforms at Worcester since Track 1 and Track 2 between CP42 and CP45 aren't used much anymore? If they remove or move Track 1, there would be a generous amount of space for a second platform.

A second platform for Worcester would be nice, but it would require stairs and an elevator to access the second platform from the station. I don't see that happening in the near term, although if they add more reverse commute trains they'll have to figure out a better way to keep them out of each others way.

I agree that it has merit in the mid-long term, but finding the political will and $ to do it would be tough. Unfortunately there aren't ant major developments happening adjacent to the station like at Yawley that would help build the need for such work.

The attached photos more accurately show what it used to look like... which is to what I was referring in my earlier post. Seems like they could shift the tracks over and rebuild again and still leave room for freight on the right hand side. Regarding a bridge and staircase, I would think that might take away from the original architecture of the station whereas perhaps the tunnel still exists and just need to rebuild the platform and canopy and open it up again?

Very nice pics, haven't seen them before. There is no remnant of any tunnel that I can see from standing on the platform, likely it was removed when the station was reconstructed. I agree that a yawkey style.stairs and elevator wouldn't be keeping with the station's architecture but I'm sure they could come up with something. The other alternative that comes to mind is converting the layover yard into platforms, but that's quite a walk from the station proper.

There is a tunnel under the tracks from the parking garage to the ground floor of the station... I presume that is the same tunnel from back in the old days.

Right, I walk through that one every day, but that wouldn't help anyone access a second track at Worcester.

You would have to build new shafts for stairs and an elevator between the tunnel and track level, but you'd need those in one form or another to access a second platform. At least with the tunnel you only need to build the one set going to the new platform (a bridge over the tracks would require a second set on the existing platform or modification to the station building).

I believe most of the improvements have been extending existing Framingham trains all the way to Worcester. I'm sure if the state ever gets the schedule it wants though they will need more equipment - either that or do what they already sometimes do and routinely cancel trains they don't have equipment for

Word is now the schedule and full re-opening of Yawkey is slated for the 13th of January.

Also, as of Monday track 5 @ Yawkey is in service, 7 will not be.
