Metro is holding a press conference now....station to remain closed through the weekend. Outside firm is being brought in, along with equipment, to examine the concrete structure to see what is causing the debris to fall.

Due to two separate incidents of concrete (and a metal bracket) falling from the station canopy, Metro has closed the station 'at least' through closing Friday, Sept 2, to investigate.

"The metal bracket and concrete debris that fell on Wednesday night was utilized to fill an approximate 6” gap between the beam that supports the platform and the escalator support frame. While the bracket does not serve as a primary structural support, the bolts that secured the bracket deteriorated likely due to exposure to environmental elements. Repairs were made overnight and Red Line service was restored Thursday morning."

The platform span girders are isolated from the track way girders. Essentially there are 3 parallel spans between each trestle bent, one for track 1, one for the platform and one for track 2. The issue is in the platform span. All WMATA elevated stations are built this way
