Lest we feel that WMATA is dead last in everything, I suggest we look at NYCTA.

Their system is far older, as much of a political football, and [unlike WMATA at present] overloaded to the nth.

Yeah, I was getting sick of everyone pointing to NYC as the shining example of perfection when it comes to Subways. Looks like NYC is entering the same period WMATA entered a few years ago of extreme dysfunction and unreliability. Only a matter of time before there is a fire or major safety problem causing parts of the system to be shut down.

Most Subway systems in the U.S. are in bad shape right now because American's don't value transit the way other countries do. This might be slowing changing now, but we have a lot of work to do.
