I think that's a great idea! I'll gladly take all their 5000s and 6000s on the Red Line. In exchange, they can have all our 4000s. Keep them. Godspeed.

Shouldn't they then be able to restore the 6 minute headways? Maybe they could have some trains turn back at Eastern Market like they did with silver line trains before.

I've been hollering about implementing this since Friday when they went back to normal service...

They're likely sourcing this WMATA tweet - https://twitter.com/Metrorailinfo/statu ... 0277369856" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - which is already false; MetroMinder shows 16 Blue-line trains in operation currently only 10 of which are 8-car trains. Now granted, that's a very good proportion of 8-car trains on the Blue line, but at least it should line up with what the media/PR side is saying...

Edit: Apparently WMATA "added" 6-car trains to the Blue line after they sent that tweet out, but didn't reply in such a way that everybody would see the response.

Move all available 7k cars to the Blue and Orange lines as they are the least power hungry cars in the fleet.

Is a 8-car 7000-series train that much less power hungry than a 6-car train made up of 1000-6000-series cars? Would the extra 2 cars outweigh the fact each 7000-series car draws less power?

I would want to see test data on that.....

You can do the math based on the horse power rating of each series.
Code: Select all
Seres 8 car HP 1 car HP

1k 6,400 800
2, 3k 6,400 800
4k 6,832 854
5k 7,520 940
6k 7,120 890
7k 6,000 750

Trains to resume normal service at Stadium-Armory on Monday (11 09 2015)
WMATA press release
11 05 2015 10:08 AM EST

The quick and dirty upgrade of the Potomac Avenue substation is a temporary band-aide fix that will have a long term effect.

When the Stadium-Armory substation is fully restored the total traction power capacity in the area will be increased by 3 megawatts.

As if 6 minute headways should be considered acceptable rush hour service...
As if they actually regularly maintain even that...

The limiting factors are:
  • Rolling stock availability and
  • The rules governing the way trains are being operated as the result of the 06 22 2009 Fort Totten wreck.
