Paul Duggan has a story in the WP that Metro is seeking a 10% increase in subsidies from its participating jurisdictions in order to close the next fiscal year's budget gap, caused by falling revenue (ridership) and increased costs. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/tra ... story.html. Metro's workaround would be to run rush hour trains at 8 minute intervals, not 6, including on the Red line. And, "During nonpeak hours on weekdays, and on Saturdays, the frequency of trains on all lines would be changed to every 15 minutes from the current 12, according to the proposed budget. On Sundays, trains would run every 20 minutes instead of 15."

The pdf of the presentation to the Board (for this week's hearing) is here: http://www.wmata.com/about_metro/board_ ... udgets.pdf.

This seems like a calculated gamble by Metro - asking for 10 and hoping for maybe 5-7%. The documents make clear that 15% was the original goal, though, so maybe much less than 10% would cause significant impacts.
