Pictures in the twitter posts by Montgomery Country Fire Department and ABC7 show the lead car on the rails leading into pocket track B3. The first truck under the second car is derailed and the second truck on the second car is on the rails of outbound track B1. If you zoom in the second picture posted by the Montgomery Country Fire Department the points of the turnout are set for the through route on track B1.

WTOP Report: https://wtop.com/tracking-metro-24-7/20 ... o-station/
The Washington Metrorail Safety Commission said in a statement later Tuesday that, while they continue to investigate, initially, it appears that the first car passed a red signal and entered a center track, while the second car continued forward and fell off the tracks.

Yes, WMATA SCADA data confirms train 108 overran the B08/26 signal. Further, the OPS1 button controller had only seconds before issued a command to set a route from B08/26 through to B08/36, a straight-through move for train 108. Switch 5A (controlled by signal B08/26) had previously been set for a turnout move into the pocket track for non-revenue train 880, which preceded train 108 on the outbound track. Hence, the lead car on the train went towards the pocket and the second tried to go straight but derailed.

GGW, via the wonderful Steven Repetski, has a detailed write up of the sequences of events that lead to the derailment. https://ggwash.org/view/78345/a-redline ... ro-station

Mr Repetski identifies himself as "a Virginia native and has lived in the Fairfax area for over 20 years. He has a BS in Applied Networking and Systems Administration from Rochester Institute of Technology and works in Information Technology. Learning about, discussing, and analyzing transit (especially planes and trains) is a hobby he enjoys."

Based on the language he use to describe the conditions of the interlocking and the events that took place he still has a lot learn.
