If you haven't yet seen this film, you need to.

I do not own nor do I benefit from this film or its content.  It is a great look at G5s operations, as well as early Diesels and the very rare C-51 class 0-8-0 switchers.  Had to be taken early into Dieselization, as G5's #40-49 were the first to disappear off the roster.

I do remember watching G5's under steam at Mineola, although I was only 5 years old when they were extinguished. We should all look at our resources and get the money together to fund either 35 or 39 at this time. At age 70, I sincerely worry that I won't see one under steam again, at least not here on Earth.

I doubt NY MTA / LIRR would look favorably on operating a restored steam locomotive hauling excursion passengers on their lines.

Despite that, Riverhead to Greenport and return would make a nice excursion.

I’d consider providing private car MOUNT VERNON for a fund raising trip in support of such a cause.
