They don't always go on the secondary but then again they do go down the secondary. They usually go only to Garden 3W block which is approximately 1500 feet east of Garden interlocking. The reason they go onto the secondary is because the sandite train crew needs to stay clear of the regular scheduled passenger trains on the Hempstead Branch and if there is not enough time in the schedule to spin in Hempstead yard, they go onto the secondary and wait there for clearance to head back west to the mainline.
But this is a first for me as this is the first time I have ever seen the sandite this far east on the secondary.

I noticed the third rail after the train crossed Washington Ave. When was that installed there? Also, is there a signal controlling movement from the Secondary onto the Hempstead Branch? Thanks.

There should be a Dwarf P/L at Garden to allow moves off the Secondary to Hempstead Single main track.
The 3rd rail dates back to when the Hempstead Branch was electrified, this allows a MU set to clear the main ,then change ends to head east.
Garden was an interlocking, remoted to Queens tower.
