A couple of interesting changes have gone into effect with the new MD/N schedule, effective 2/1. Libertyville and Lake Forest have been added to NCS 120's schedule, while Grayland has been added as a seasonal stop to the weekend express trains during baseball season for Cub home games. For more details...

Second train just a whistle away...

Lemont officials would like to see more commuter train service for residents this year, and believe it is a real possibility.... Metra officials have indicated they have the existing equipment and personnel to add one more train, that would pick up in mid-morning and return in mid-afternoon.
I would imagine this would be similiar to what SWS had before expansion... the first set after arriving into Chicago would deadhead to Joliet. Though that would be a long trip to DH twice a day.

The amount of deadheading would be a little higher on average than those on other routes, but not by that much. Theoretically, the morning run back to Joliet could leave about 10-15 min. behind Amtrak's Lincoln Service run to St. Louis, which departs at 7am, and arrive in Joliet in time for an 8:30am run back to Chicago, for instance. But with CN in the mix, it may make more sense to ease into this slowly, and just add one extra train as a pilot project first to see if it sticks, then add the other one later on if the demand is really there...

About quiet Zones, I notice on the Metra/UP North West Line Through Woodstock, the Metra Trains don't blow for the crossings, but the UP Freights do.
Why is that?

Interesting to see that Donald Udstuen was on the board back then. He went to prison as part of the investigations around Gov. Ryan.

Durbin Announces Nearly $7.7 Million in DOT Funding for Illinois Green Transportation Projects:
Illinois Department of Transportation (Chicago Metro): $341,694 in TIGGER II funding to install automatic shut-down and start-up systems in an estimated 27 locomotives in the Metra fleet, which operates in the Chicago metro area. Metra estimates that by shutting down instead of idling the locomotives, the automatic systems could save an estimated 800,000 gallons of diesel fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 80,000 tons per year.
