Metra Bilevel Assignment And Maintenance Changes
- Discussion related to commuter rail and rapid transit operations in the Chicago area including the South Shore Line, Metra Rail, and Chicago Transit Authority.
In addition to the 8515 and 8520, cab car 8526 is also roaming UP rails. Additionally, former UP cab car 8401 is now being used as the lead cab car on a Heritage Corridor consist (the one that has five cars).
Question: Does anyone know which 7100-series car is currently tarped up under Roosevelt Road? (From the 6/3/2011 accident in CUS.) Thanks in advance.
8448 is the first rebuilt 8400 to make its way to SWS, trailing on #825 tonight.

Four of the five ex-VRE cars are still roaming around UP (7840 was on the Rock at last report), but I've only seen less than half of the former Frontrunner cars in service so far (#'s 7789, 7794, 7804, 7810, and 7811). I've also seen 8738; think it's a former UTAX car, but not sure. Trying to compile an unofficial list of these older cars, any other sightings?

Besides the new paint job, all of the former Frontrunner cars in Metra service have blue seats instead of the orange ones. In the case of the 7810 ( I rode this car home a week ago), the seats look like they were originally installed in the 8400/7400 cars.
The 8738 is a former Frontrunner car as well.

At least four other 8500 series cars have moved over to the UP besides the 8507. The others currently roaming the former CNW lines are cabs 8503, 8515, 8520, and 8526. Five of UP's 8400 rehabbed cab cars are now running on the Milwaukee District and HC (8400, 8401, 8403, 8409, and 8414).

I have no idea what the order is right now, but I've recently seen 8406, 8417, 8423, and 8428, so that's a start...

I hope the seats are better. The original 84xx 74xx seats were horrible. Otherwise, it looks like the MILW lines are becoming Metra's dumping grounds; 84xx, 74xx and 4xx.

I have no idea which 7100 car is tarped up, but I did see a couple of 7100 cars at rock island yard in Chicago. The one close to the new 35th street station. I was not able to get the numbers, though.
