I recently saw a plate on a prime mover which appeared to be an original EMD plate. It indicated the diesel was a 567BC. I was under the impression - mistaken perhaps - that EMD made the 567, 567A, 567B, etc, and the BC was a conversion done aftermarket by others, combining the C liner with a B head. Did EMD itself ever make a 567BC?

I think EMD did call some late-producton 567B engines 567BC. (So GP7, for instance, were built with three different engines: 567B, 567BC, and, at the very end of production, 567C.) I don't know what the technical specifications were, so I don't know if the later modifications to 567B engines (by, e.g., IC/ICG at Paducah) produced engines with the same characteristics as "factory" 567BC.

The "BC" is a modification to the 567B crankcase which allows this installation of 567C type cylinder liners, water inlet manifolds, and water jumper lines, eliminating the need to maintain the troublesome lower liner water seals and water deck which were used in the earlier 567 engines. This eliminates a major source of water leaks in the 567A and 567B engines, which are called 567AC or 567BC respectively after the modification. The change in model designation was necessary in order to properly identify the correct replacement parts to be used in the engine. The availability of the conversion was announced almost as soon as the 567C went into production, and was offered for many years as a rebuilding option by EMD.

The 567BC was a production engine from September 1953 to May 1954. This data is from the EMD Service Department Locomotive Reference Data dated January 1, 1959.

I'm compiling a list of the 243 units built with the 567BC engine by EMD.

There were 243 units produced by EMD with the 567BC engine between October 1953 and May 1954. This information was compiled from EMD Service Department Locomotive Reference Data, dated January 1, 1959. There were eight EMD models and one submodel produced with this 567BC engine. The models are SW8, SW9, E8A, F7A, F7B, FP7, GP7 and SD7. The submodel was one GP7M.

Does anyone have reliable information on any GMD units built with the 567BC engine in 1953 or early 1954.
