Would it it be possible (or practical) for E.M.D to build a SD72IE? A locomotive that combines SD75I characteristics and SD70ACe characteristics? For example it would have a SD70ACe nose, flared radiators, and dynamic brakes on the rear. The cab would be of SD75I design with a slanted windshield and seam, but a ARR control stand. The mid section would keep its SD75I shape as well. Would it be possible to move the cab door from the right side of the nose to the left side?

Polite responses are preferred, rude ones are not.

Try writing to:

Electro-Motive Division
General Motors Corporation

Maybe they could built it in Canada and call it an SD72IE-Eh!

The SD80/89/90/70/M/AC/e's body is a modular design leaning towards ease of maintenance and operation. The ACe's are equipped with AAR stand with read-out screens. The tear-dropped shaped windeshields and the M/I style nose of the 70/75's and hoods more likely than not could be built but the RR probably would not want to spend the extra dough. Although, crews seem to prefer as do I, the extra piece of glass, and a stand as the ACe and M-2 offer. UP has some SD70's with the boxed off nose and tear-drop windshields. EMD's theory is make it simple and at least a better buy than the next guys.

DDA40X's have doors on both sides as do the C44-9WL's.

I think they have their own appearance, but I'd like to see the old slanted windshields too.

Terry...

Please stop flooding these boards with your what-if ideas. Every time you post something like this the answer is still the same... anything is possible with enough money but it would never be practical. Go ask these questions in the MODEL railroad forum and let us talk about REAL locomotives.

Isn't EMD for sale? Maybe you should buy it, and see if any of your ideas sell in today's marketplace-

crazy_nip and Justin B I want to know whether or not the locomotives I am kitbashing could really be built on a budget. My knowledge of locomotives is limited so I ASK QUESTIONS. THEN YOU TRY TO BITE MY HEAD OFF AND TELL ME TO GET OUT OF HERE. EDM5970 I can not afford to buy E.M.D I AM NOT A RETARD. JUST AN IDIOT!!!

Another day in the muddle choo-choo fantasyland!

(Moderator-- I'm not sure this is an appropriate post: please delete it if not.)
These forums are for discussion of locomotives: history, technology, design, preservation, operation etc etc.... We've got people with many different backgrounds and different interests, and I think that's a GOOD thing. (Certainly I, as a railfan, am fascinated when working railroaders and people with backgrounds in the locomotive industry post here!)
If someone doing "freelance" model railroading-- modeling without a specific real-life prototype-- wants to know how plausible his "what if" idea is, then they're no longer JUST a modeler: their interets have broadened out and they've become ... I guess "locomotive historians" would be the simplest thing to name their interests. And if they want to ask questions on a forum with lots of knowledgeable participants, why shouldn't they?
And if you don't share their interests... I'd recommend just ignoring their posts.
(Maybe, Terry, you could help them with their blood pressure problems by putting some warning, like "what-if-quest", in the title box so they know which strings to ignore?)(Grin!)

may I then suggest a "locomotive fantasy" forum where these people can go fantasize away in the privacy of their own forum??

these type posts really have no business here, this forum is about actual locomotives, not fantasyland...

Thanks for the help Allen Hazen. I have been trying to figure out how to respond to some of the replies people post.
