The model released by MDC is an overall excellent engine :P :P .I have one in unlettered painted orange with black stripes for my 1970s-1980`s Fox River Traction Company. The little engine looks good (surprisingly) pulling strings of 50ft cars

While my favorite would have to be the SD40-2, my close second is of the rare breed, the only unit to ever have is hp rating the SD80MAC. Don't ask why, but there is just something about those locomotives.

My favorite EMD is the 1,800 hp SD-10.

The SD-40_2

When you open the throttle, they respond...

And they don't drop their load either...

They work every time... :-D

And comfortable to run and ride in too....

:P

I have two favorites. The SD30T-2 and the SD45T-2.

Sorry...I blew it I meant SD40T-2 and SD45T-2.

Wow... an SD30T-2 would be a funky looking locomotive! Think about it... the distinctive cab of a GP30, with the long hood and radiator section of an SD40T-2... I might just have to kitbash that! :-D

EMD GP30s are really cool and the SD-45 is one of the best. It made people think of buying more 6-axle units. Lots are still going strong too.

An SD-30T-2 would look weird. If you do make a model I want to see a picture of it MEC407. Those F40s are a nice engine. A lot better than any GE AMD-103!

OK guys, you inspired me. Here is a quick-and-dirty mockup:

O.K., how long is the frame on your quick and dirty SD30-T2? When "Railroad Model Craftsman" published their infamous SD30 drawings, I thought there was an error: the unit was the same length as a conventional GP30 (in other words, they had just changed the trucks), whereas a real SD30 would surely have been on the somewhat longer frame used for earlier and contemporary SD units (SD7 through SD35 had the same length).
The T2 radiator installation was very long: the SD45-T2 was the same length (70'8") as the (four-radiator-fan) SD45X and (I think) the SDP45, rather than the 68'10" of the ordinary SD45-2. So I'll bet an SD30-T2 would have to have some non-standard long frame.
Nyaah, nyaah, nyaah!
(Nice picture though!)

The frame is an SD40T-2 frame. All I did was graft on the GP30 cab and DB section.
