You bring up a good question. The answer is, who knows? EMD is known for really arcane nomenclature. The biggest examples:

-What is the diff between "General Purpose" and "Special Duty"? Especially now that no "general purpose" units are built and everything is "special duty", which means it's the definition of "general purpose".

-What does the "70" mean in SD70? It's not the horsepower. Back in the 60's, GM's marketing machine decided to let the model number grow faster than the horsepower, but nobody was fooled. Railroads don't buy locomotives like suburbanites buy cars.

The list goes on and on, but I quit trying to make much sense of it long ago.

Correct. Three radiator fans vs. two, and 10 power assembly access doors vs. 8.

GT46PAC in India was a failure. She has a lot of wheel slippage issues.

Indian Railway (IR) is now converting them to GT46MAC's passenger version, i.e. 6-motors with gear ratio to suit passenger traffic. All locos built new in factory during the last two years have 6 TMs.

IR has also developed inerters and software locally. They have a bank of six inverters for freight and passenger locos (based on original GT46MAC design).

All these locos deliver 4,500 HP.

Has anyone heard of trouble (over heating) with EMD's SD70ACe dynamic braking resistors during the rail? I have heard some rumors of this but wanted to bring it to the Forum to learn more/confirm.

EMD's prototype Tier 4 locomotive is moving to the RSIA show in Minneapolis via NS from Muncie to Chicago, then BNSF to Minneapolis. A photograph of the tarped locomotive has appeared on Trainorders.

Progress Rail has released a short video showcasing the new SD70ACe Tier 4 prototype, which features the 12-cylinder 1010 engine (redesigned 265H) as well as a redesigned cab:

Cat-EMD has released a video showing the new locomotive;

Also they have released official photographs of the locomotive. Plus of course now that the locomotive has been shown to the to the Industry there are unofficial photographs as well out there.
