I asked around at a Yahoo group I am a member of, and here were some of the replies:
This unit most likely derailed, there were signs this was the case.

The locomotive was pulled away from the right-of-way by a dozer or "Cat" or something of the likes, as the tracks were visible. As I understand it, this is standard UP practice when this type of thing happens.

Cando Contracting is the operator of CEMR, and they are aware of their locomotive's situation.
Went up and checked this guy today, it is the former Chicago and Illinois Midland 23. Was sold to D.J. Joseph Transportation, who resold it when they went out of the locomotive business. That latest buyer had apparently resold it to CEMR, and it didn't end up making it there.

Why not PGE abandoned an ALCO RS-3 #572 at M.P. 185.1 between Kelly Lake and Moran on the Lillooet Sub in an area called dry slide after it fell thuw a burned out trestle that was built over an area where a land slide had taken out the tracks befor. The Locomotive was left in place and used to stabilize the fill when the washed out area was filled in. 2 photos can be found on page 87 of the book British Columbia Railway by J.F. Garden.
