JUST A THOUGHT, I WOULD IMAGINE IT HAD TO DO WITH REMOVING THE HV CONTACTORS, AND REVERSING DRUM, FROM IT'S REMOTE LOCATION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAB FLOOR (OBVIOUSLY CENTERED ON THE ENGINEERS STATION) AND PUTTING IT INTO THE FIREWALL, WITH THE REST OF THE HV LEADS. LARGER CONTACTORS, CAPABLE OF HANDLING MORE CURRENT/AMPS COMES TO MIND, AND THEY PHYSICALLY WOULDN'T FIT INSIDE THE "POTATO CHIP CAN", ANYMORE. THIS ALONG WITH A BLOWER COOLED CABINET, PROBABLY GOT THOSE OLDER CONTACTORS "OUT OF THE ELEMENTS", SO TO SPEAK. (I LOVED THOSE OLD CAN STANDS, WITH THE MANUAL REVERSER DRUM ATTACHED. BEEN A WHILE SINCE I'VE RUN ONE....) LARGER CONTACTORS, WITH SHORTER CABLE RUNS (CLOSER TO THE MAIN GENERATOR), SEALED CABINET, WITH COOLING, AND HIGHER CAPACITY ARE MY BEST GUESSES. ANYONE ELSE ?

BACK TO THE TOPIC. MY ORIGINAL ANSWER WAS A THEORY I HAD, AS I HAVE WATCHED THE EVOLUTION OF THE #6 BRAKE TURN INTO AN EPIC ELECTRIC BRAKE, AND THAT POTATO-CHIP CAN TURN INTO A DESK-JOB. ANY THOUGHTS, FROM ANYONE ELSE, ABOUT MY LINE OF THOUGHT, ON THE SUBJECT? ANY EMD "FACTORY" GUYS OUT THERE ? REGARDS :-D

Not sure about why they changed types, but I have worked on an ALCO S-2, retrofitted with an EMD can type stand. Santa FE did the conversion back in the early/mid 60's and did an awesome job, it looks like it came from the factory that way. I've actually been inside of it as I had to replace two of the fingers on the throttle drum.

That was their answer to making older ALCO equipment MU-able. They installed the EMD control can, and the external electropneumatic throttle controller. ( the throttle controllers were used on the 567-A engines, but were replaced with the PG governor ( with internal throttle actuators ) on the 567-B ))

Pretty interesting retrofit, but then again - Santa FE was known for its wierd projects.
