I was able to slip north for a 24 hour visit to north country, and
was able to catch the 1802 hustling cars south from Apuilia. I had
hoped to get a bit farther north, but ran into the CL-1(and its
esteemed crew)just south of Tully heading south for Cortland with one
car for Natruim, and "a bunch" for Suit Kote. Here are the images of
the chase (so to speak) from there into Cortland:

First off, just south of Tully(although probably closer to Preble):

Next a pair of shots at(or at least pretty much close to) Preble:

Next, coming through Homer:

And finally, two images in the last gasps of light as the train
arrives in Cortland:
(I have to get the story on the stuffed bear on the ground next to
the tracks!)

And to round things out, here's a couple of images from the Jersey
end of things:

Thats it for now! Enjoy.

I know I have posted once before about the 18's and rebuilding. On the EMD forum they are speaking about repowering GP9's and GP38-40's. With turbo 710-8's. Creating 2000 hp. I have heard around the 18's might be rebuilt. (HUGE MAYBE) do not quote me. Would it be cost effective to have EMD rebuild the units with the more efficent 710? I know and understand the problems with the frames, and of the lack of traffic. Assuming traffic come back up and the frames are ok this would help with the high fuel prices and the local power.

This is a long explanation that time and space don't allow.

There's a whole need to understand what a turbocharger is, how it works, and why it works best in some applications.

Basically, that's why there are still hundreds of first and second generation non-turbocharged units still in active use. Slow speeds, frequent speed changes, topography, short trains, switching requirements...

There's enough theory and practice to fill several textbooks.

Now in this specific case, you have three very old, very tired frames, pairs of trucks, and engine blocks, in a model originally built without central air systems, owned by a railroad that in its history had prolonged periods where maintenance may have been haphazard, or maybe better stated, performed by organizations outside the railroad proper.

I'd believe going to a 710 block with turbochargers in a GP 7 through 35 frame when I see it for any railroad. And in this case, save your quarters for preservation as museum pieces. They paid their dues, they were workhorses for almost fifty years. Respect the reliability, hours and horsepower they provided, and let their places be taken by rebuilt 38's.

I understand that they are old and tired. I just saw something new and wanted to see ideas. These ideas are not limited to the GP18's, as for the turbo chargers I do understand how they work as I am very familiar with forced induction. I own a Supercharged car. The Turbos run off of exaust gasses and the motor usually needs to be reved up for them to produce the extra power. As for the NYSW on the Southern Devision I can understand why you would want a non turbo engine to make sure you enough toque to pull the cars.

Hahahaha - I had to chuckle - be replaced by locos that are only a handful of years younger than they are!

Its simply amazing how long EMD locos last doing what they were designed to do, day in and day out for half a century or more

True, true, true on the 38's...

But considerably more of them still around and kicking, better standardization of components, etc... and I think the largest standard non-turbo'd prime movers still in common use. That's the only place I was going.
