Today, the NYSW received at interchange 6 GP38-2s from NS and CSX( 3 Apiece). And for a history lesson, the numbers are: CSXT 2624, 2725, and 2732. The NS units are the 5273, 5293, and 5294. Heritage is as follows:

CSXT 2624, built as L&N 4117
CSXT 2725, Built as PC(later CR)8065
CSXT 2732, Built as PC(Later CR)8087

NS 5273, Built as PC(later CR) 8063
NS 5293, Built as PC(later CR) 8097
NS 5294, Built as PC(later CR) 8099

While I couldn't locate decent pics of all the units both in their present and fomer numbers, I've enclosed links to what I could find:

If anyone could dig up pics of the L&N 4117, CR/PC 8097 and the CR/PC 8065, it would be appreciated. Thanks!

On a sad note, GP 18 # 1800 is up for its 92 day inspection and will likely be moved west on monday nights SU-99. Once up north, it is anticipated it will be drained, and placed into long term storage, as "stored-servicable". Looks like her days may be just about over. the 1802, and 2062 are expected to do the same when they come due for their next 92 day inspection, but nothing offical yet on this, so stay tuned.....

I wonder how many miles 1800/1802 have lugged. IMO both are worthy canidates for preservation at a museum, versus the torch.

Btw, I just read in another forum that the 1802 just had her 92 day inspection in late October. If thats the case then she may soldier on for a few more months into next February.

Get your photos now!!

Forgive me my ignorance, please, fellas.

Will these units run in their current colors or be painted as yellow jackets?

Any idea on the terms of the lease vis a vis time? I would think that the length of the lease could be indicative of the future direction of the railroad, would it not? Then again what do I know? The more I try to learn about railroads and railroading, the less it seems I understand.

I find it odd that the units were leased from NS and CSX and not a "normal" leasing company - HLCX, Railworld, LTEX, etc, etc, etc.

Does NS and CSX still equally share ownership in the company, and is it more of a loan rather than a lease by the parents (if they are still parents?)

JT, from what I had read a few months ago the NYSW was working on a deal to least 6 GP38-2's from GATX leasing but that deal fell through for some reason. Im taking a guess and this is just my opinion, but NS/CSX had a lil better terms in leasing this power, just as CSX has leased some 6 axle road power in the past. These units are probably the evil readheaded step children of both rosters.

as for either ending up in a museum. I'de seriously hope so. A few months back while waiting for an SU-99 to pass thru maywood i was talking to someone who had said that maywood station might look into getting one of the gp18's once retired. That would be an ideal fit for one.

Those GP18s, if fully operable, have a considerably higher resale value on the market than a lot of other older engines. Maywood is going to need pretty deep pockets if they can't get one for the scrap value.

Latest power news.....The SU99 monday 12/3 will have 9 engines on it. the leader is one of the CSX GP38-2s. then the 4 road engines that came down in the morning, and the rest of the local power, 3040, 2066, 1802, 1800 are all going north to be stored. The GP38-2s will be the local power and for some reason i also heard that 2 may be on the road pool.....stay tuned for the fate of the yellowjacket local power.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a number of the YJs going out to Dansville. It would make sense.

thats what i thought when that post about all the YJ local power going to bingo. Said to myself that they are probably going to get these units or some of them a minor overhaul now that they can spare them in the shops.
