In this photo of 8366 is the CRCX on the cab for the same reason there are NW and SOU letters on other locomotives? What is the reason anyway? Also what font does NS use on its cab numbers?

The CRCX indicates that the locomotive is owned by Conrail Corporation a wholly owned subsidiary of CSX and NS. Remember CSX and NS leased Conrail so all of Conrail's equipment and real estate is still owned by Conrail not CSX and NS. Hence the CRCX and PRR reporting marks on former Conrail locomotives and the NYC on former Conrail rolling stock conveyed to CSX. NS subletters locomotives for the Central of Georgia (CofG), the Cincinatti New Orleans Texas Pacific (CNOTP), The Georgia and South Florida (GSF) as well as the Norfolk and Western (NW) and the Southern (SOU). This practice is a carryover from the Southern which sublettered locomotives for most or all of its subsidiaries. I am not sure if there is any financial benefit to all of this but it seems that these subsidiaries still exist as paper railroads within the NS.

So would you say technically NYC and PRR are not "Fallen Flags" anymore?

When CSX and NS began the split up of Conrail they created NYC LLC for CSX and PRR LLC for NS. These are new shell corporations and have nothing to do with the original PRR and NYC. Conrail was able to use the PRR and NYC names since they owned all rights to them. I consider the NYC and PRR to be fallen flags since the reporting marks were bascially used to split up the locomotives and the rolling stock and to show Conrail ownership after the split.
