How often do trains pass through Windber, Pennsylvania and is there a set schedule? Do SD80MACs regulary show up in Harrisburg? (Pennsylvania's capitol) Where else are SD80MACs regulars? Thanks.

From my experiences during my visits to the Altoona area, there is a large number of SD80MACs assigned to South Fork. Sometimes they will go to Cresson for servicing and can be seen at the engine facility there. There are also a few locals in the South Fork and Conemaugh areas that the SD80MACs will be assigned to. There's also a mine in Portage that they will take cars to and from. Recently, some of them have been on the point of some mainline through freights and some coal trains out of the Altoona area.

I am not sure about the frequency to Windber, so I'll need to defer that part. My advice would call for a trip to South Fork. During a weekend morning, a trip to Cresson may find some of them there as well.

November 8, 2007 and a handful of SD80MACs head west from Cresson to South Fork with a D9-40C and a D9-40CW in the mix.

The sd80macs are occasionally being used on coal trains down the port road to Baltimore. So if you really want to be adventurous and catch them somewhere not many other people have...

As of Saturday, 4/12 there were 2 SD80MACs in NS paint (unit #'s unknown) in New Jersey. Saw them on a stack train when I dropped off someone at Newark airport.

The Windber trains get there in the morning. I have yet to see the Mine 78 tipple load a train at night.

A train has been taken out there and left overnight, but this is not the normal operation. Mon-Wed-Fri are normal loading days. Saturday and Sunday loading happens as well.

A typical train goes as such...One crew takes the train out and loads, one crew takes the train back to Southfork and possibly to Altoona.

As of late, the loading has been going alot smoother.
