Today, Fink and Mellon made a surprise visit to Ayer. Flew in via helicopter,(unloaded at Devens somewhere) but talking with a few employees around Ayer today they think something pretty big is going on with the yard. Anyone hear anything? They even held up 23K about an hour or two, just in case they wanted to use the crossing at the wye.

Are you sure the crews weren't pulling your leg? Seems a little over the top that Mellon and Fink came swooping in by helicopter unannounced.

Maybe the execs just wanted to see the Erie Heritage unit heading up the 23K? It's been a big rail fan draw!

Rich folks tend to be partial to the helicopter travel, one on the town I grew up in would use his local shopping plaza as a pad... Not as farfetched as one might believe

Hopefully they didn't put up a sign "Future Home of Hill Yard Condominiums!"

If Magic works his magic, there'll once again be movies in Ayer.

At one point in time Mellon was a licensed helicopter pilot and perhaps still is. I recall reading an article in Forbes or Fortune from the early eighties about his rail investments. There was a picture of him flying his helicopter with one of the yards full of rail cars clearly visible out the helicopter window. It was one of the rare interviews that he participated in.

Quiet Logistics in Devens appears to be doing a major expansion. New building going up and land cleared straight up to track 11 in the Hill. MOW was there today "cleaning up". I cant find anything saying they might be using rail, anyone heard anything on this?

Also Cains has closed up shop.
