Rigby Yard — Activity, Sightings, and General Discussion

Swung by Rigby at around ~10:30 am, POED's power was sitting out front with NS 3482 / MEC 345 / MEC 608 / NS 3471, along with MEC 611 / MEC 373 / MEC 371 and three more GP40s between the 611 and 373.



Took a few pictures of the power at Rigby, then heard chatter of 691 arriving at OOB. Swung down to the Scarborough salt marshes, and just barely caught 691 as it blasted through with P42DC 174 leading the charge.



Had a few things I needed to do in Portland, then just missed 694 going through Scarborough (crossing gates were still down when I got there), but I decided to stick around for 693, which was about ten minutes early with the 72 leading.



Five minutes later, POED headed west through the salt marshes with the earlier power listed.




I would have ended up chasing it, but I got stuck behind some red lights, and heavy traffic ensured I never had a chance to catch up. Finally ended up passing through Rigby again around 6 pm, power outside the yard office was MEC 517 / MEC 373 / MEC 371 and BM 335 / MEC 313 behind the yard office.

There's been a long line of lp gas tanks, stretching the entire length of the yard, sitting on the 2nd track in on the west side of the yard for well over a month now, at least 6 full weeks. It has not moved the entire time. I've never seen anything sit on those main yard tracks for that long before, only on the shorter storage tracks a little farther down on the west side of the yard. Wonder what's going on with that tank line ? Sure has blocked a lot of good views of jobs rolling in and out of the yard behind it !

Perhaps a stored oil train, like the one at Walnut, waiting for oil traffic to resume?

Well they are the extra long gas tanks, and though I'm not certain if they are empties or loads, I've seen tons of additional gas cars roll thru going south and north during that time. If they were for the local transload, or Portsmouth, I'd think they would be moving, and the line shifting, little by little, but they have not budged in over a month, plus they are occupying one of the commonly used yard tracks. They could have easily been set off on one of the storage tracks a little farther down, even in 2 cuts if necessary due to length. Bizarre...

Propane cars. According to the placards. Been there atleast 6 weeks. Buy low. Sell high.

So then they are just SIT (storage in transit) cars right, my initial thought was that with the increased gas traffic, they were going to start collecting the empties as they came back, until there were sufficient numbers for unit trains back to Canada. But that could have happened weeks ago. Surprised they're not putting them in the storage section, instead of taking up main yard track space.
