instead of spray paint, it would be faster and easier to use a pump action paint gun, similar (or identical) to what foresters use to mark timber. no bending over, can hit the target from feet away rather than inches away, etc.

Picture from yesterday at Depot St. Westford. I believe they used this to distribute more new ties between crossings.
This machine has no man in the front cab, it is controlled remotely by the operator of the excavator.
