Age is the primary reason. Those things are well over 30 years old. CSX is getting newer engines from EMD and GE and older but younger engines are pushing these old pre-CSX engines off the roster. They've had a good life and it was time for them to go anyway. Sad to see them go but it was time.

From the looks of the photos, noticing that the engine is still in place tells me that they suffered a major engine failure. As far as 8972 goes, parts for the 20 cylinder engine are difficult to get and expensive at best. Financially wiser to retire with all the newer engines coming in to the power pool. The 4615 suffers from being a very old model and is no longer cost effective to continue to repair and upgrade. As a major repair issue manifests itself, there are most likely numerous other minor issues as well, not to mention the fuel comsumption and exhaust emissions far beyond current standards.
