How does Benning in DC recieve loaded coal/return empties for use down the pope's creek? I'm assuming that these trains are coming down the Cumberland Sub. Thanks!

Coal trains for Southern Maryland operating via Benning are brought from Brunswick by a crew to Benning. Depending upon the operating situation, the power may be left at Benning for the crew that is called on duty at Benning to take the train from Benning to Bowie over Amtrak and then down the Popes Creek Sub to the Morgantown Power station down on the Potomac River. Empties return via the reverse route and are take from Benning back to Brunswick.

Note - power that brings a train into Benning must run around the train to take it out of Benning - in either direction if the origin or destination of the train is Brunswick.

In the Conrail era, Benning was an interchange point for coal with B&O/Chessie/CSX.
