Are the CP GP9's GP9m's or GP9u's? I've seen them referred to as both. Same with the GP7's. Can anyone clear this up for once and for all?

In normal use, the letter m (for modified) is used to designate units which were rebuilt as they were before or downgraded, whereas, the letter u (for upgraded) indicates some improvements were made such as a new electrical system, an increase in horsepower, etc.. In the case of Canadian Pacific, the remanufactured GP9's and GP7's still used in locomotive service are all of the u variety.

CP's as-built GP9's, if there are any left (there were 5 at last count), are simply a GP9 with no extra letter.

I had seen a lot of CP Rail GP9's in and around Smiths Falls, Ontario Canada back about 3 years ago I saw about 10 of them in active Road service.

The units in the 15 and 1600 series are switchers. The 8200 class is in local road service.

So do they have a special modification for road service, like a different gear ratio? Im wondering because i saw a few tonight in Conklin yard.

No....the 1500's , 1600's were in the GP9 remanufacturing program in the late 80's early 90's for the 179 of the 185 of the GP9's, most of the GP9's had the original 567C block but which was rebuilt with a newer 645C block, the rest of the GP9 the 8200's were remanufactured & renumbered for road service. Now most of the 1500's & 1600's are in yard service while some are paired up with slugs for increased T.E

The 1500-1600 units do not have transition, and are limited to 35MPH, for yard service..the 8200's are still intact road units, with DB

can they be coupled to a loco with transition? i.e. GP38-2's, or other Road units?

the 8200's can be coupled on to any train at anytime. If anything they are most likley in use on branch lines scattered about system wide.

We don't that many CPR GP9's in the Chicago area most of our Local power is SOO GP38-2 or CP GP40-2's.

None of the GP7/GP9 units have 567 power anymore they all have 645s in them so none are as built. All, to my knowledge are GP7U or GP9Us now.

If the CPR GP9u's are anything like our GP9Rm's then they have 645 power assemblies on a 567 block.

How often would you see these GP9Us be used on main line trains? I saw one this summer, running by itself, with about 45 cars, and it was running on the River Sub in MN. I though it was pretty rare to catch. :-D

Locally it's rather common to see a couple 8200s going north on the 514/515, the Binghamton- Saratoga local. They also get the occasional 7300 series GP38-2.
