Since there is no separate Illinois Central forum, I guess this is the correct place to ask, seeing as IC is now a part of CN...

Did the GP11, SD20 and SW14 locos that IC (re)built in the late 70s/early 80s receive new 645 engines, or did they keep the old 567 ones?

I couldnt find any information on the GP11s. Sorry. However, the SW14s (CN/IC 1400-1511, broken number groups, 25 remaining) show a 12-645 (1200HP) for power. The SD20s (CN/IC 2025-2041) show 16-645 at 2000HP. This doesnt mean these dont have 567s with 645 power packs but this is what my information shows. The GP11s seem to be numbered 8700-8750 or so from what I could gather. Can anybody find info on the GP11s?

They kept the 567 engines. Later 567-series engines can essentially be converted into 645's using 645 power assemblies and parts--but I don't know if this was done with the IC rebuilds.

According to the Trackside Guide the SW14s began life as SW7s, SW9s and one NW2 (built 03 '45). I dont know if these are late enough to convert, but Im no expert. Is there a timeline that separates early from late series? It would help when these kind of questions come up in future. Just asking. Im not one of those 'know-it-all' kind of foamers.

So, since this is the CN forum... How is it with CN's rebuild GP9s? GP9Rm, or whatever they're called... Do they still have the original 567 engines, or have they too gotten 645 engine blocks?

I found a great page relating to 567's shortly before posting my last message, and apparently 567A and 567B engines require special parts to convert to 645 specs. However, 567C (and later) engines have a new crankcase design which will accept 645 parts. The 567C was introduced in 1954 in the 9-series units (F9, E9, GP9, etc) and can be told from the 567A-B by round (as opposed to square) handhole covers.

I came across another discussion in which the answer is given: CN's GP9RM units had their 567 blocks retrofitted with 645 power assemblies.

It makes sense to me now why the GP9's are still running (in rebuilt form) when CN's GP7's have long been retired: the GP7's had 567B blocks and therefore wouldn't be as easy to upgrade to 645 specs.

The GP9's weren't the only 567 powered units to get the 645 power assemblies, the 1400 series GMD-1's and the 7300 series SW1200RS' have all been rebuilt with 645 power assemblies. The ones that didn't get the extensive rebuilds have been retired. (1100's, 1200's, 1300's, 1900's, etc.)

BTW, I used to work on a railroad that used ex-ICG GP10's, they did indeed have 567 engines with 645 power assemblies. The 645 power assemblies gave the locomotives an extra 50 horses. 1800 hp instead of 1750, the same with the CN GP9RM's, they are rated at 1800 hp now instead of the 1750.
