http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=127321. Here is CN SD45T-3 #401, a ex-DM&IR unit. It may be a first, but I am completely against seeing any more DM&IR or B&LE engines being repainted. CN really needs a heritage fleet. Hopefully they won't do any more for a while. I wonder if CN will repaint some WC SD45s, I hope not.

A heritage fleet would be real nice. I'd say it's possible.

I was able to get a pic of this guy at Tolono,IL 12/03/05. I would of loved to get a shot of it before it got painted.

If I am not mistaken, do all of those SD45's still have their V-20's in them? Another reason there also, bigger engine equals more fuel consumption. And that is not that great with the current price of diesel.

Also are the former Algoma Central SD40-2's (#'s 6001-6006) in any great danger as well? I wouldn't think so.

The WC SD45's are true 45's with the V-20. The DMIR Tunnel motors are re-powered with V-16's I just had the DMIR 400 last night fresh from Centralia. Flashed over 2 traction motors, made for a long night.

As for the Algoma Central units, I don't think they are in danger yet.

Relative to the horsepower produced, the 20 cylinder 645 actually consumes slightly less fuel than the 16-cylinder version--and its overall consumption is still less than the 4300-hp 710 in CN's many SD75's. So, retiring them based solely on fuel consumption wouldn't actually be justified. From what I can see, the most likely reason that CN would be retiring the 45's would be their age--CN has precious few pre-Dash-2 units in road service and even many of their GP40-2W's have been retired. The recent purchase of a slew of SD70M-2's and ES44DC's--precisely to replace older power--does not bode well for the SD45's.

I don't think so either. CN is a big fan of the SD40-2--It's one of the most numerous types on the roster, and CN purchased more SD40-2's second hand after building a large fleet of SD40-2W's purchased new. Very few (either SD40-2 or SD40-2W) have been retired--those that have were mainly due to wrecks.

Bad news, CN has repainted DM&IR 402 into CN colors. Enjoy DM&IR power while you can as it seems to be coming to a end. CN also removed half of Proctor Yard's tracks and the second track on Proctor hill. All CN cares about is money and profits. Also, CN's ES44DCs are beginning to arrive. Lets hope they don't replace the DM&IR SD38-2s, WC SD45s, or any GTW or DWP SD40s.

Komachi, your friendly, neighborhood moderator, did yet another "spit take" upon EJ&ESDM809's news of...

"CN also removed half of Proctor Yard's tracks and the second track on Proctor hill."

SAY WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATT?!?!?

Iron Ore (well, technically, taconite now) hauling is just as Minnesotan as hockey, tundra wastelands, Common Loons, Pink Lady Slippers, wild rice, ice fishing, Garrison Keiller's "A Prairie Home Companion" and electing professional wrestlers as governors! Considering Minnesota supplies the United States with 2/3rds of it's iron ore/taconite, they'd be wise to hold onto that aspect of things and not do too much tinkering with it ("streamlining" operations is fine, obliterating it would not be wise).

Otherwise we'd have to retaliate by inviting the powers that be to a pot-luck and serve Lutefisk*.

* For those who weren't "bleesed" enough to be born of Norwegian ancestory or are from the Gopher State, Lutefisk ("Lye Fish") is cod that is preserved, in a dried state with Lye to keep it from rotting. The fish is prepared three days in advance by muliple soakings in water to leech the lye out of the fish, which is then baked or boiled. The end result being a soft, gellitan (Jell-O) like, fish flavored substance.

And, no, dispite being nearly 100% Norwegian-American, I do NOT eat the stuff.

I forgot to mention the 6001 is a SD40 from 1971, and 6002-6006 are SD40-2's from 1973. I'd say their safe. Same with the ex-MP SD40-2's GT has. But what is with a few of the 1969 and 1970 SD40's being retired? Surely they could be rebuilt as SD40-3's, with upgraded electrics and dynamics?

The good thing is no SD38-2s have gotten repainted yet. I did see DM&IR 209 at Homewood last summer. Very nice looking engine. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=121104
