I was reading in a old TRAINS mag about how in the late 1970's the Frisco started running short haul coal trains from a Garland (City?), MO mine to Springfield. I was wondering if they are still running that train, and if not, is it because the plant in Springfield is no longer coal fired? Thanks.

Although I can't say with absolute authority, I will say it's HIGHLY UNLIKELY that train is still running. Even if the mine still has coal and even if the plant still burns coal, the plant would be buying their coal from the Powder River Basin -- much lower sulpher which makes the EPA happy!

Well you are wrong about the coal trains in Springfield mo. BNSF has taken it over, reballasted the track and now uses 3 SD 60s on front and 2 as helpers on the back. And go thru town in the daytime around noon thus causing bad traffic tieups.
