Back in 2000 BNSF and CN had planned to merge. CN’s Lewvan and Northgate Subdivisions from near Regina, Saskatchewan to Northgate and a connection with BNSF on the US/CAN border was to have been upgraded from a prairie branchline to become a main route into the US mid-west (roughly parallel to CP’s current line through Portal)

CN has now applied to abandon this trackage but interestingly about a 1 mile section of the line will be retained at the border (but now isolated from the rest of the CN system).

What were BNSF’s plans for line from Northgate to Minot at the time of the proposed merger and what is the current status? I wonder if CN will now turn this short section of track over to BNSF to serve an industry on the Canadian side of the border at Northgate?

Just read on one of the CN newsgroup sites discussing the abandonment that there's a grain loading facility on the Canadian side that is currently served by BNSF over a short section of CN track.
