Now this is quite surprising, given the fact Class I's have been known for selling branch lines, not bying them. I'm guessing the short line just wasn't financially well off, unable to provide upgrades to the line which has been seeing more traffic, and BNSF decided to snatch back what they spun off in the mid 90's. Anyway, good news for the BNSF crews in Sioux City.

BNSF is reacquiring the line because of the two Shuttle Loading elevators along the line and the prospect of a third. Given the fact that this Class III carrier consists of just the single line plus there will be a need for significant upgrading of the line if the third shuttle elevator is built, and finally these facilities which were built after the line was sold to NENE and now constitute the majority of its revenue, BNSF wants to simplify its relationship with the customers. When the line was sold all the elevators were small and were served by trains doling out a cut of cars to each elevator.
