Mr. Pennsyfan, does this
I would say a private corporation like brightline would be an ideal company to run this line since it would not have to worry about federal or state funding and could run new equipment (with bathrooms) multiple times a day since it is one company focusing on one area, rather than the government which focuses on hundreds of other responsibilities which also need funding, which only leaves the railroads some but not enough money in most cases.
mean that you think a private company could earn enough in fares and ancillary revenues to pay all operating costs, costs of buying and maintaining equipment, cost of stations and right-of-way, in short, enough to not only break even or make a profit? I assume you don't mean that private companies without state funding have gobs of money to spend on lines of business that lose money. And almost the only passenger trains that have made money anytime in the last few decades, or by some calculations ever, are the Mt. Washington Cog Railroad and the Tokyo subway systems. Pretty much every other passenger train, trolley route, etc., has been somehow subsidized for a large part of its life, either by government, or by freight revenue, or by land sales (like Brightline now) or similar businesses that the railroad's parent company used the railroad as a loss-leader for.
