I just got the following Call for Entries from a local art gallery, and encourage everyone here to consider entering some appropriate work:

CALL FOR ENTRIES

(Somerville, MA) The Nave Gallery invites artists to submit work for the photographic exhibition "Art or Espionage: Photography in the Age of Homeland Security."

Concept:

Images of public spaces and seemingly public spaces such as subways, trains and buses have been a favorite of street photographers since the inception of the lightweight, portable 35mm camera. Additionally, bridges, dams, and city skyscrapers have been endlessly documented for their beauty and drama. However, since 9/11 authorities have increasingly demonstrated a desire to restrict such photographs in fear of their misuse.

Many photographers, however, continue to document the world as they see it. For them it is a matter of freedom of expression as well as a need to respond to their muse. For this exhibit we are seeking submissions of work where the artist’s intent may be viewed with suspicion in today’s political environment.

The exhibition will be held February 26 - March 26, 2005. The Nave Gallery is located just north of Tufts University in Somerville, MA. The gallery is an artist run nonprofit art space, a project of both ARTSomerville and the Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church. More information on the gallery and ARTSomerville can be found at our webpage: www.ARTSomerville.org/nave.html .

The deadline for receipt of submissions is Friday, January 14th. There is not a submission fee but participating artists will be asked to pay a small fee (not to exceed $25) to assist with exhibition expenses. Interested artists should send a copy of their CV and up to 5 slides or JPEGS on CD to:

The Nave Gallery

Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church

155 Powderhouse Boulevard

Somerville, MA 02144

Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you would like to have slides or CDs returned. Or you may email low-res JPEGs to Susan Berstler at [email protected]. Artists will be notified of acceptance by email before Wednesday, January 19. Drop off date for work is Saturday, February 19th from 12 to 3. Artists are responsible for dropping off and picking their work. We cannot be responsible for receipt of shipped material.
