Is a couple of drops of windex on both sides of the lense and a clean cloth ok?

I would use specific lens cleaning fluid and cloth. Windex may adversely affect the lens coating material, and not all cloths are suitable for coated lenses. A good quality eyeglass cloth can be used. Both lens specific fluids and cloths are inexpensive.

Also, it is important to carefully blow off any dust from the lens before cleaning it to help avoid scratches. A bulb syringe type of blower is available at camera stores.

Finally, after cleaning the lens, use a UV or 1A filter so that the lens is protected from trauma. Filters are far less costly to replace.

On July 4th, 2007 I took photos of the fireworks in Taos, NM and a couple of small embers hit the filter (camera was pointing up on a tripod) and damaged it. A $40 filter is a lot cheaper to replace than a $600 lens.
