The Volunteer Railroaders Association has announced the return of their very popular Easter Bunny Train Ride to be held this year on April 4th and 5th. The trains will be run out of 2 new locations and offer new things to see and do. Ticket prices are still only $9.00 for children under 12 and $13.00 for everyone else. But if you purchase the tickets on line through their web site http://www.easterbunnytrain.com you will save 50 cents per ticket.

On the April 4th the trains will depart from the NJ Transit Rt. 23 Transit Center at 10 am, 12 and 2 pm. These trips will run out through Morris County before turning back at Dover. Along the way the trains will pass by the Boonton Restoration yard, where much of the railroad equipment destined for the NJ Transportation Heritage Center is stored.

On April 5th the trains will depart the NJ Transit Rt. 17 Ramsey station at 10:30AM, 12:30 and 2:30PM. These trips will run up through scenic Rockland and Orange County New York and will feature a run over the 3200 foot long and almost 200 foot high Moodna Viaduct, the highest and longest trestle east of the Mississippi, a sight you will never forget.

During the one hour and 30 minute ride the Easter Bunny will hop through the train and visit each child and give them a special gift from his basket. In addition each child can have his or her picture taken with the bunny so they can always remember their ride, so bring your cameras. Also on board will be other cartoon characters to entertain the kids and make for a great day out for all on board. For more information or to order tickets call the VRA at 973-238-0555 or visit them on line at http://www.easterbunnytrain.com , major credit cards are accepted.

These trips are being run to help raise funds to restore and preserve the historic NYS&W Hawthorne train station. This little train station has been sitting on the corner of Diamond Bridge and Royal Avenues in Hawthorne for over 100 years and is a fixture in the middle of town. The current plans are to move the station about 75 feet north (railroad west) to get it off the corner and stop the overhanging roof from getting hit by passing trucks. Once that is done it will be restored and opened to the public on a regular basis. Inside the station will be a railroad library of items mostly donated by Joe Weber, who was a founding member of the VRA and who passed away in January of 2007. There will also be historic items from the Borough of Hawthorne. This project is currently being worked on by the town, railroad and the VRA.

So why not gather up the kids and Grandparents and join the VRA and the Easter Bunny on these fun train rides. You will not only have a great time with your family you will also be helping to preserve history for generations to come to enjoy. Tickets for these trains usually sell out quickly so don’t delay call or visit them on-line today. The VRA staffs their ticket office on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6 to 9 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4 pm all other times just leave a message and they will call you back.

The Volunteer Railroaders Association is a federal 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. To join us in our efforts to operate this train or with the move of the station e-mail us at [email protected]
