Intense rains today caused the waters of the lake to rise, taking out the tracks at Weirs Beach, including the boardwalk. Anyone who has been there knows that the lake is down a good 6-8 feet or more from the level of the track and boardwalk, so that is a hell of a lot of water dropped to raise the lake that much. (though it had been up some from the frequent rains this summer.)

Did it actually take out the tracks or are they just covered with water with the real assessment needing to be done once the water recede?

According to the news report on WMUR.com

"On Weirs Beach in Laconia, a 50-foot stretch of boardwalk, including train tracks, was destroyed when a culvert couldn't handle the sudden rush of rainwater. Residents said it poured rain for two straight hours.

"Rain like crazy, thundering, hail," said Meredith resident Carol Reale. "I mean, it was just incredible. I never saw anything like it."

The scenic railroad that travels along the boardwalk was shut down at least for the day Friday as crews tried to make repairs."

If you look on the WMUR web page, to the right of the story in the viewer videos, you will find footage for the railroad washout.
