The Black River & Western Railroad's steam locomotive #60 has been OOS for almost 7 years. After being taken out of service in November 2000, volunteers have been working very hard to get her running again. Some of the work that has been done so far is work on the tender, running gear, and brand new tubes and flues. The flues came from Germany and the tubes came from Pittsburgh.
#60 is so close to being complete it isn't funny. There is over a 75% chance that she will be finished this year, for the flues and tubes are now (June 2007) in. Many of them are rolled. They need to be welded yet. Then it boils down to putting everything back together again. #60 will probably be completeted by this year, but most likely will not run until the 2008 season. We are not sure the dates or months when this will happen, but there is a no BS chance that she will be steaming again. The flues and tubes were the most major repairs done on the locomotive, and now that they are all in and mostly rolled, things will fly. Keep your fingers crossed.
Special thanks goes out to John and Paul for keeping the project alive and having the heart and will to volunteer their time to have this gem running once again.
Here are some pictures taken May 12, 2007. Right now, all of the tubes and flues are in, but this shows how it is done.
