A new Railroad preservation society is currently in the process of being formed in Hammond, Indiana.
The group, Northwest Indiana Railroad Preservation Society, is forming to help preservation NKP 624, a 2-8-2 mikado and other railroad equipment on display. The mikado, which was donated by the Nickel Plate Road in the Late 1950's has been under the protection of the Hammond Parks Dept, however continued detoriaration and vandalism on the display are prompting local residents and railfans to take over maintanance and security.
