Folks, I recommend you visit Bellows Falls VT and ride the Green Mountain Flyer. It is pulled by an antique Alco that looks fantastic! The ride is about 12 miles out to a depot at Chester VT, where the engine runs around the train, crosses a flagged crossing, then hauls the antique coaches back 12 miles to Bellows Falls. There are two covered bridges along the route, some trestles, rock cuts, etc, with a river beside you most of the way. You also pass through a freight yard where you sometimes pass a switcher or two. Back at the station at Bellows Falls, you can sometimes catch Amtrak or freight.
There is also the White River Flyer, which runs out of White River Junction VT.
Give them a try!
