There's an L L Bean commercial currently making the rounds which features the song "Big Rock Candy Mountains" in the background. But it will be interesting to see if more of us recognize the late Harry K. "Haywire Mac" McClintock as the artist.

Mr. McClintock was cut from a lot of the same cloth as Woody Guthrie: DPM and the gang at Trains never paid much attention to him, but he made more than a few appearaces among the earthier content of Freeman Hubbard's Railroad.

And once in a great while, some of his repertoire, which was larger than generally known, will show up on a PBS or similar broadcast.

Nice to see a little niche of Americana, which ought to be familar to more of us, resurrected.

Thanks for the tribute to a great American artist! One of the best cowboy/train song singers ever! I heard he had a TV show in the Bay Area near the end of his life...wonder if any clips are out there? People think of "Big Rock Candy Mountain" as a cute rolicking kids song even with all those subversive lyrics, and original versions were about a skeevy old tramp trying to lure a young kid away from the farm for a life on the road.
