Hello,
To my surprise (due to the ongoing rail blockades in Canada), SLR/SLQ did run road trains last night. On this frigid morning (in the -17 to -19 oF range), today's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0810 with the following:

QG GP40 3105
GP40-2 3007
GP40-2 3035
6 tank cars
9 covered hoppers
8 hi-cube boxcars
5 boxcars
1 centerbeam flat

That's 29 cars total, all empties. There were only cars from Pan Am and South Paris/Mechanic Falls, nothing from the Lewiston Branch and no propane empties.

It took them awhile to get rolling out of town, as the train wheels had frozen to the rails overnight.

The locomotives were kind of a funny mix: the normal (3105), palest (3007), and boldest (3035) paint schemes.

There's still about 25 cars parked in the yard at Island Pond and waiting to go east.
Have a great weekend,
Fritz

Hello,
Things are slowly getting back to normal on the St. Lawrence & Atlantic. Today's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0753 with the following:

QG GP40-2W 3014
RLHH SD40-2 3403
QG SD40U 6904
68 propane cars
8 tank cars
2 covered hoppers

That's 78 cars total, all empties and all originating out of Lewiston Junction.

There were 14 loads of lumber waiting to unload in Island Pond and 16 or so empty lumber flats.

Looks like SLQ ran the plow this past weekend after the big, wet snows.
Best,
Fritz

Hello,
The St. Lawrence & Atlantic an extra road trains (393/394) last night. This morning's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0842 with the following:

GP40-2 3047
GP40-3 3805
RM-1 805
33 propane cars
1 tank car
2 boxcars

That's 36 cars total, including 2 loads and 34 empties.

Today there were 12 lumber flats being unloaded in Island Pond (and many empty flats waiting to return west).
Best,
Fritz

Hello,
Today's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0745 with the following:

GP40-2 3004
GP40-3 3804
RM-1 804
26 centerbeam flats
4 bulkhead flats
6 tank cars
26 covered hoppers
3 boxcars
15 hi-cube boxcars

That's 80 cars total, including 1 load and 79 empties. It looks like it will take a lot of switching in Richmond to block the train for Toronto, Taschereau, and Joffre.

Of note, 3004 is back on the road after having been in Lewiston Jct. since mid-December (I am assuming to be worked on).

Also of note, there are still 20 lumber loads and 11 empties in the yard at Island Pond (the only other cars there are the 7 hi-sided scrap gons that have been there all winter).
Best,
Fritz

1502 has also been out of commission in the shop for several weeks while it's mate 1504 was parked outside.
Noticed both back together working this afternoon.

Hello,
It looks like much of the backlog has cleared, and today's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0806 with a relatively short train:

GP40-2 3004
RM-1 804
GP40-3 3804
8 centerbeam flats
15 propane cars
8 tank cars
4 hi-cube boxcars
1 covered hopper

That's 36 cars total, all empties. I am guessing that the relatively short train may partly be due to the lack of inbound cars during the track blockades in Canada.

There were 8 lumber flats being unloaded at RCP; otherwise, the 7 AIMX scrap gons and 1 SLR MOW flat were the only other cars in the yard.
Have a great day,
Fritz

RM-1 805
GP40-3 3805
9 centerbeam flats
8 hi-cube boxcars
1 boxcar
2 propane cars
3 covered hoppers

That's 23 cars total, including 1 load and 22 empties.
Have a great weekend,

1 bulkhead flat
13 tank cars

Hello,
On this cold morning, SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0817 with the following:

GP40 3004
RM-1 804
GP40-3 3804
8 centerbeam flats
20 covered hoppers
12 propane cars
10 tank cars
5 hi-cube boxcars
1 boxcar

That's 56 cars total, including 2 loads and 54 empties.

Meanwhile, there were 15 loads of lumber to be unloaded at RCP (and they pulled 8 empties last night). Otherwise, things were pretty quiet in the Pond.
Stay healthy,
Fritz

Hello,
Today's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0806 with the following:

RM-1 803
GP40-3 3803
GP40 3004
4 hi-cube boxcars
2 covered hoppers
8 propane cars
6 tank cars

That's all, 20 empties. A very short train.

At Norton, a track foreman and Sperry Rail Truck were waiting to get track time to head east.

Finally, there was a big explosion in the wood digester at the Androscoggin Mill in Jay, Maine:

https://www.sunjournal.com/2020/04/15/e ... ll-in-jay/

Thankfully - and amazingly - there were no serious injuries, but this will not doubt affect inbound and outbound traffic on both Pan Am and a lesser extent SLR (inbound chemicals, outbound paper).
Stay safe and healthy,
Fritz

and one mt centerbeam lumber car.

Hello,
And tonight's SLQ eastbound 394 reached the U.S. Canada border at Norton at 1845 with the following:

GP40 3004
GP40-3 3803
RM-1 803
RLHH SD40-2 3403
9 centerbeam flats
4 bulkhead flats
11 tank cars
5 propane cars
3 hi-sided gondolas (loaded with scrap metal)
9 covered hoppers
7 boxcars
15 hi-cube boxcars

That's 63 cars total, including 55 loads and 8 empties.

It is my understanding that 394/393 will not run tomorrow night and that there is a distinct possibility that 394/393 may be cut to only two nights per week (that's all they ran last week). Traffic is way down!

Meanwhile, schedules are also out of wack due to an extensive tie replacement project going on along the Sherbrooke Subdivision in Quebec. Westbound trains are currently called on duty at 0500 in Island Pond and should remain so for the next few weeks.
Best,
Fritz
