another view of the CMRR caboose:

Porthole on this end too. Interesting.

Also, note the inside grab bars on this side of the caboose are straight up and down. On the other side they are curved, as I've seen all other cabooses of this type. This might indicate the caboose was damaged and repaired at some point.

The back of the 1986 photo of the CMRR's car when it was still CR 18616 (see above) had this information on the back:

By the way. ex-LV 95041 (CMRR 643) has been returned to live rail...

http://catskillmtrailroad.com/cmrr_407.php

It is privately owned by one of the CMRR volunteers. No decision as to its next paint scheme.

Ok, we are finally getting a handle on this!
I think its now very reliable and confirmed that:

LV 95041 - ex-CR 18616, steel, cupola, built 1937, currently Catskill Mountain Railroad number 643.

Despite the theories earlier in this thread, the Catskill Mountain RR did *not* in fact have their caboose incorrectly numbured!
All the confusion has come from this list:

http://crcaboose.railfan.net/renum.htm#N-5G

Which simply contains some incorrect data..
Its quite possible Conrail messed up somewhere..perhaps that list, on the Conrail caboose site, came directly from Conrail,
and the list does not match reality, in respect to one caboose at least, and probably at least two..
Perhaps the list was once "official" and the cabs got numbured "wrong"..or the cabs were numbured correctly and the list
was written wrong..who knows! ;) but we do now know the cabooses dont exactly match the list, which by now, means the list
is simply wrong, regardless of the original conrail renumburing intent..

So we have found "The Real 95041"..She is Ex conrail 18616, now with the Catskill Mountail RR..

That leaves one more mystery..the Real Conrail 18617, for sale a few years ago, the East Penn Railway 18617:

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=1027951

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=1517608

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=1517606

Where is Conrail 18617 now? and which LV caboose number is she?

and it looks like the photos that say "EPRY 8617" are ALSO wrong! ;)
Its EPRY 18617..the number 1 is somewhat obscured, and a photographer must have mis-read the number as 8617..
its likely there is no such thing as EPRY 8617..it should probably be only EPRY 18617.

643:

673:

Some videos of the lifts:
Caboose 643:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ik1uPOQII8
the link says its a youtube video of caboose 643..so you click on the link, and the video says its 673!

And here is a photo:
http://photos.greatrails.net/showpic/?2 ... 011706.jpg
that lists both numbers at the same time..

643 vs 673

I can add some light here. Currently the LV caboose is unnumbered. 673 is the official CMRR number for the caboose - we have 671 (the D&H caboose), 675 (the caboose in Kingston), 674 the caboose in Shokan, and 672 the former LS&I caboose frame in storage at Shokan. 674 and 672 are also privately owned.

The LV caboose is privately owned by a CMRR volunteer. He has thought about 643 as an alternate, as that would be appropriate for a U&D caboose number. However, the N5 caboose in the Phoenicia yard that belongs to the ESRM is numbered 643, so I think it is unlikely that 643 will be used. But it is the owner's decision, and we'll find out what he wants to do when we see a number painted on the caboose.
