Somewhat of an obscure question dept: Just wondering way "back in the day" when bodies of water that connected RR's, cities and towns froze in the winter, if ferries were ever replaced by horse drawn passenger sleighs? Seems a good candidate for that may have been Port Kent NY-Burlington VT though there may have been a rail connection a bit North of there to Burlington via the Rutland then?
